Meinung/My Opinion:

Das vierte Buch der Friedhofstraße 43 ist wieder einmal eine großartige und abenteuerliche Geschichte, die wieder sehr schön gestaltet ist.

Diesmal spukt nicht nur ein Phantom im Postamt vor sich hin, sondern Severin wird von der Phantomgrippe niedergestreckt und muss im Krankenhaus das Bett hüten. Dabei lernt er die handysüchtige Wy kennen und freundet sich mit ihr an. Zur gleichen Zeit bricht für die Bewohner von Schauderburg eine Welt zusammen als das Postamt geschlossen werden soll und ausgerechnet die Briefe liebende Olivia Spence dies zu unterstützen scheint. Können Severin und Wy das Postamt und dessen Phantom retten?

Es ist sehr schön, dass Severin endlich Kontakt mit Gleichaltrigen hat und eine neue Freundin gewinnt. Zusätzlich erfahren wir ein wenig mehr über Olivia’s Vergangenheit, lernen mal noch mehr Schauderburger Bürger kennen, treffen alte Bekannte wieder und ärgern uns über den Postminister. Eine sehr gekonnte Mischung.

The fourth installment of the 43 Old Cemetery Road series is a funny entertaining little adventure story in which Seymour finally gets a friend of similar age – Wy Fye.

This time around there is a phantom in the post office while Seymour is hospitalized because of the flue. Meanwhile Seymour tries to prevent the closure of the post office, which – to the surprise of Seymour and the citizen of Ghastly – is supported by the letter writing and loving Olivia Spence. Can they stop the impending closure?

I really enjoyed the story and I am happy to see Seymour with a friend of the same-age. Moreover, we learn more about Olivia’s past, meat more Ghastly citizen, get reaquainted with old friends, and are annoyed by the minister.

Fazit/Bottom Line:

Eine wunderbar unterhaltsame Geschichte, die wieder einmal ganz toll gestaltet und illustriert ist.

A wonderful entertaining story, which is designed and illustrated beautifully.

Meinung/My Opinion:

Dieses Buch ist das Zweite in der Raven Mysteries Reihe und ich habe es gelesen ohne den Vorgänger zu kennen. Es war auch kein Problem, da die Abenteuergeschichten allein stehen und für mich ohne Missverständnisse zu lesen waren.

Der Rabe Edgar erzählt aus dem Leben seiner Besitzer und besteht mit den Kinder der Otherhands das ein oder andere Abenteuer. Nachdem Karlwin und sein Affe einen Geist gesehen habe und auch die Bediensteten einer nach dem anderen vor Schreck erstarren, geht auf Burg Otherhand der Schrecken um. Als ein Geisterjäger seine Dienste anbietet, sind die Kinder skeptisch und versuchen dem ominösen Geisterjäger sowie den Geistern auf die Spur zu kommen.

Das Buch ist eine lustige und unterhaltsame Abenteuergeschichte. Ich persönlich finde, dass die Perspektive des Raben die Geschichte aufwertet. Die Mischung aus Geistern, Abenteuern und schrulligen Familienmitgliedern verleiht der Reihe einen gewissen Charme. Der Schreibstil ist sehr angenehm und das Buch ist wunderbar und passend illustriert. Wirklich zu empfehlen.

Ghost and Gadgets is the second book in the Raven Mysteries series by Marcus Sedgwick. I read this story without knowing the first one.  I feel that the stories are self-contained and can be read in any particular order. I had no problems, whatsoever, to follow the story and so I assume it will be the same with the other books in the series.

The raven Edgar narrates the story of his life with the Otherhands. When a ghosts appear in the castle and servants are frozen in terror, a supposedly famous ghost hunter offers his help. The Otherhand children and their faithful raven Edgar are skeptical of the ghost hunter’s capabilities and begin to solve the ghostly problems themselves.

This book is an entertaining and funny adventure story which is enhanced by the narrative perspective of Edgar. The mixture of ghosts, adventure, and quirky family members lend charme to the series. The writing is fluent and the book is as whimsically illustrated as the family members are quirky. I really really enjoyed them.

Fazit/Bottom Line:

Eine unterhaltsame Abenteuergeschichte mit Geistern und skurrilen Familienmitgliedern. Definitiv zu empfehlen.

An entertaining adventure story with ghosts, quirky characters, and a loveable raven. I highly recommend it.

My Opinion:

I love this book! I love the series! I love the author! I don’t love that the trilogy is over, but I so happy and grateful I stumbled across The Chronicles of Ixia or the Study Trilogy – whatever you want to call it.

(SPOILER: If you have not read the previous books, you might not want to read on!)

Yelena stopped Ferd from completing the ritual to gain uncontrollable powers and released the souls he had captured. Thus identifying herself as a Soulfinder, a powerful Magician, who is feared in Sitia. When Yelena begins to search for the Ferd, who has fled the Keep, and discovers a plot against her former homeland Ixia as well as Sitia, she fights and struggles to save both countries while keeping those she holds close to heart alive as well. Yelena faces off with her strongest opponent yet and in order to do so, she has to accept what she really is.

Just as the books prior, this one was thrilling, funny, exiting, and fast paced. I mean really fast paced. Sometimes it was to fast for me. I do understand that plans do not necessarily have to work out the way they are planned, but it seemed they never really do with Yelena.

About every 30 pages there is a new twist and they have to plan again. There is always someone who wrecks those lovely and logical plans. It was a little frustrating and I wanted something to go right at times. I liked that although Yelena is very powerful, she is not a superhero kind of person, but still gets into sticky situations where she needs help and accepts that.

But because of this fast pace and because of the wonderful characters that I learned to like, love, and hate, I couldn’t put the book down. After I started it, I knew I had to finish it in one sitting and I did.

The characters are lovable as always. I enjoyed the sarcasm and bickering between Yelena and her brother Leif (something that was new in this book), Valek’s unfaltering trust, Yelena’s doubts, Ari’s and Janco’s arguing, Maren’s loyalty, and Rose’s bitchiness. It was definitely a great combination.

I don’t think I have to say anything about the writing anymore: it’s fluent, easy, and wonderful.

Bottom Line:

A great and satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. I’m gonna miss the characters, but I will definitely pick up other books from this author.

October Book Haul

As usual I bought many books that I maybe, probably, most certainly did not need since my pile of unread books grows all the time. I know, I have a problem. Well, actually more than one, but I digress… So let’s get to the books I bought:

Derek Landy – Skulduggery Pleasant

My friend explained it a lot better and more detailed, but I have forgotten a lot of that conversation. I just remember it sounded good and I put it on my wish list immediately and now I got it as a bargain on eBay. And I can’t say no to a bargain.

Agatha Christie as Mary Westmacott – Giant’s Bread

Ebay has been my weakness for the past month. Since I was working late and had to wait for programs to complete list etc that I could than work on, I looked through eBay and found quite a lot. Agatha Christie is usually something that is never bad, but this is actually a novel she wrote under her pseudonym Mary Westmacott and it is a lot bigger than her usual novels are. So, I probably should not expect a Poirot/Marple kind of story, but it’s a Christie. It can’t be that bad.

Elisabeth Herrmann – Konstanze

Since I am going to a reading in November I purchased some of the books for the signing for myself and as presents for family and friends. Elisabeth Herrmann actually writes a lot of thriller,but she has published these two historical novels. I chose those for me because I was not in the mood for thriller. The last once I have been reading were so gruesome and disgusting, that I just had to stop for a while. And since I got both books as a deal, I had to have them.

Agatha Christie – A Cat Among Pigeons

Another Christie I got off eBay. This time it is not published under a pseudonym, but is a good old Poirot novel. Let’s see if I can figure this one out before the end.

Jospehine Angelini – Dreamless

This is the second installment in the Starcrossed trilogy. I have read the first part and it is a nice book. In retrospect, the love story is a little and maybe more than a little annoying, but I really like the Greek mythology and the rewriting and using of those myths. (Since I really enjoyed Percy Jackson and the Olympians, I gave this a try) The basic idea is really good and entertaining. And as usual I do like the minor characters a lot more and want to know what happens to them. So I am looking forward to the book.

Meinung:

Ich bin über dieses Buch in der Bibliothek gestolpert und da ich bis jetzt noch keinen Fantasyroman einer russischen Autorin (oder eines russischen Autors) gelesen habe, war ich fasziniert und habe gleich zugegriffen.

Es war mal ein anderes Buch und ich habe ganz große Probleme mit dieser Rezension. Ich persönlich bin mit der Geschichte leider gar nicht klar gekommen. Obwohl der Ansatz und die Idee wirklich wunderbar und vielversprechend sind.

Galina, die schon immer anders war und die von ihrer eigenen Familie für verrückt gehalten wird, erlebt wie ihre Schwester sich in einen Vogel verwandelt kurz nachdem sie ihr Kind zur Welt gebracht hat. Gleichzeitig erlebt der Polizist Jakov etwas ähnliches und traut seine Augen nicht. Er geht einfach seiner Arbeit nach und nimmt vermissten Anzeigen auf, deren Zahl immer mehr steigt und trifft dabei auch auf Galina. Nach anfänglichem Zögern machen sich die beiden zusammen mit dem Obdachlosen Fjodor zusammen auf die Suche nach den Vögeln und finden unterhalb der Moskauer U-Bahn eine ganz andere Welt. Eine Welt voller mythischer Wesen mit denen sie sich auf den Weg machen beide Welten zu retten.

An sich hört sich die Idee sehr spannend an, kann mich aber leider nicht ganz überzeugen. Die Geschichte, so schön sie auch geschrieben sein mag, hat erhebliche Schwächen und Längen. Die Handlung zieht sich und ich war ab und zu drauf und dran einige Seiten zu überschlagen.

Auf der Suche nach der Wahrheit treffen die drei auf viele Figuren und Charaktere, die alle eine eigene Geschichte haben und diese auch erzählen, ob nun für die Handlung förderlich oder nicht. Der ständige Wechsel zwischen den Erzählsträngen und den Geschichten der einzelnen Figuren hat mich genervt. Auch kam ich mit den vielen Charakteren und mythischen Figuren nicht zurecht. Zum einen weil es einfach zu viele sind, zum anderen weil ich aus eigener Unwissenheit leider nicht sehr vertraut bin mit russische Mythologie und mich deswegen oft verloren gefühlt habe.

Weiterhin nutzten die meisten Figuren ihre Stimme und Erzählungen um sich kritisch gegenüber dem Staat und dessen Verfall zu äußern. An sich nicht falsch und schlecht, aber nicht das was ich bei einem Fantasyroman erwarte und es ist auch bei der häufigen Wiederholung ermüdend.

Im Großen und Ganzen bin ich nicht gut mit der Geschichte klargekommen, weil mir die Handlung gefehlt hat und ich mich mit der nicht anfreunden konnte, was primär ein kulturelles Problem sein kann und nicht an der Qualität der Geschichte liegt. Russische Märchen sind ja ebenfalls anders als unsere Grimmschen.

Fazit:

Eine gute Idee, die leider nicht gut umgesetzt wurde und einige Längen und Schwächen aufweist. Für diesen Roman bin ich nicht vertraut genug mit russischer Mythologie und Kultur.

The idea of a Russian fantasy book intrigued me when I first discovered this book in the library. Sadly I had many difficulties getting into the story. I do believe this is due to cultural difference since I am not familiar with Russian folk tales and mythology. I felt lost among all the foreign characters and the many narrative strands dealing not only with the mythical figures but many other „normal“ characters that I often lost track of the main narrative. It was just to many things at once that left me confused and at times frustrated. Maybe it would be a different read if I was more familiar with Russian mythology and story telling. I do not regret reading the book, far from it, but it was hard to get through.

Meinung/My Opinion:

Der dritte Teil der Friedhofstraße 43 ist wieder wunderschön gestaltet und auch von der Erzählung her sehr schön.

Während Olivia, Ignaz und Severin sich streiten, ob sie nun einen Hund haben sollen oder nicht, verursacht der verstorbenen Millionär Noah Schmöller Freude und Ärgernis zugleich. Während seine zerstrittenen Kinder sehnsüchtig auf die Testamentseröffnung warten und sich gegenseitig das Geld streitig machen, finden immer mehr Bewohner von Schauderburg alte und vor allem wertvolle Münzen.

Aber was hat der Hund damit zu tun? Als der Streit zwischen Ignaz, Olivia und Severin eskaliert und der Junge mitsamt dem Hund davonläuft, kann nur noch ein zweites Gespenst weiterhelfen.

Beide Erzählstränge sind sehr schön miteinander verwoben und wunderbar erzählt. Die Illustrationen sind ein Traum (wie auch bei den vorherigen Büchern).

The third book in this series is as wonderful as the ones before.

Olivia, Mr. Grumple and Seymore are arguing whether the boy is allowed to have a dog or not. And while they fight over that topic, the millionaire Noah Breth causes all sorts of exitment with his Limericks.

When the fight between our protagonists escalates and the boy and the dog run away, another ghost appears to help negotiate.

The two narrative strands of the family affairs and the limerick riddles are beautifully intertwined and the illustrations in this book are again amazing.

It’s a wonderful short lived and entertaining read, that just gets your mind of things.

Fazit/Bottom Line:

Wieder eine klare Empfehlung. Ein schöne Geschichte, mit tollen Illustrationen und liebenswerten Charakteren.

My Reading Month October

This time around I am a little late and I’m really sorry. I was so occupied with bureaucratic crap (pardon my french) and spend hours waiting and filling out applications (that nobody will ever look at again and that I have already submitted to another part of the same department, which is just two doors down the hall; but no, there is no way in hell to pick the documents up from that office – way to easy). Sorry for ranting, but I am a little frustrated and I know there are a lot more where that came from ahead of me. So yay!!!

Anyway, back to the book part of last month. Though it was clearly not my best month (because there were days where I couldn’t be bothered to even read an email), it was still ok. I had difficulties getting through some of the books because those were books I had to read in a sitting (and didn’t really had the time) or were quite tedious to get through. So to get into the swing of things I started of with a little children’s fiction.

Kate Klise, M. Sarah Klise – Friedhofstraße 43: Ein Gespenst kommt selten allein (43 Old Cemetery Road – Till Death Do Us Bark)

This is the third book in the series and it is as lovely as the previous books. The illustrations are great, the story is funny and cute, and Olivia Spence was maybe a little annoying. All together a great and funny read.

Maria V. Snyder – Fire Study

I don’t really know what to write about this series than I love it. I loved the first, I loved the second, I loved the third. It was quite the ride through the final installment and sometimes the many narrative twists and turns were even to fast and loose for me. I had to catch my breath a few times. But this is a great series. I am a little sad it’s over.

Ekaterina Sedia – Die Geheime Geschichte Moskaus

I have never read a fantasy novel by a Russian author and I was interested. I did not get along with the story and I had difficulties following the narrative. There were just so many narrative strands that I lost track of the main story line. Since I am not very familiar with Russian mythology and tales, I was lost among all those different mythical figures. I think it is generally a cultural thing though. If I knew more about the myths and tales, I probably enjoy the story more.

Kate Klise, M. Sarah Klise – Friedhofstraße 43: Das Phantom im Postamt (43 Old Cemetery Road – The Phantom in the Post Office)

After more bureaucracy filled days I returned to Old Cemetery Road and again this was very good. Finally Seymor meets someone his own age. While “Till Death Do us Bark” was funny and entertaining, “The Phantom of the Post Office” was actually quite “thrilling” and adventurous. Really good.

Marcus Sedgwick – Gold und Geisterjagd (Ghosts and Gadgets)

I ended my month with another rather spooky and ghostly book. Marcus Sedgwick has written a wonderful book about the Otherhand family and their raven Edgar. It is a nice and entertaining book, that was funny, cute, and a little spooky. The right book for Halloween (at least for me since I really don’t like scary things).
