My Challenges 2014 – The Results

I have attempted quite a few reading challenges and I have managed to finish only one really. But I am happy with that because I honestly underestimated the amount of time and energy finishing my dissertation and working would take. So, I am happy that I managed to finish at least one of the challenges although I had to cheat a little bit and read quite a few short books to manage 65. It actually are 66 books, although Goodreads did not recognize one of them since that is a German special edition.

But here the short version:

Hörbuch Kurzrezi: Dora Heldt – Ausgeliebt & Unzertrennlich

The following audiobook is written by a German author and read in German, so the review will be in German as well. I don’t think this book will be published in English. This stories are a little chick lit for the more mature woman: the protagonist is left by her husband and starts a new life in the first book, while the second is about friendship between Christine and her friends (past and present).

Dora Heldt – Ausgeliebt

Klappentext:
Wenn man mit fast vierzig und nach zehn Jahren Ehe von seinem Mann plötzlich per Telefon verlassen wird, dann ist das ein Schock. Genau den erleidet dann auch die viel reisende Verlagsvertreterin Christine eines schönen Abends. Doch frau ist nicht alleine – Freundinnen und Schwester sind gleich zur Stelle.

Dora Heldt – Unzertrennlich

Klappentext:
Die beste Freundin: Sie ist Beraterin, Trösterin und hat einen schon vor manchem Fehler bewahrt. Ihr verzeiht man alles, mit ihr kann man alles teilen… nun ja, fast alles. Männer nicht. Und erst recht nicht über Jahre hinweg.

Gesagt, getan. Mit Hilfe von Christines Geschwistern beginnt ein regelrechtes Detektivspiel.

Meinung:

Bei diesen beiden Büchern handelt es sich um die ersten Geschichten um Christine und ihre Freundinnen. Während Christine in Ausgeliebt von ihrem Mann verlassen und von ihrer engsten Freundin betrogen wird, versuchen Christines andere Freundinnen ihren Glauben an Frauenfreundschaften wieder zu belegen in Unzertrennlich.

Figuren: Christine und ihre Freundinnen sind ein bunter Haufen, die sich gegenseitig unterstützen und versuchen aus der ein oder anderen prekären Situation zu helfen. Auch wenn mal die Fetzen fliegen, ist man doch da, wenn einer die Kontrolle über das Leben aus den Händen gleitet.

Schreibstil: Dora Heldt hat einen einnehmenden Schreibstil und eine sarkastische trockene Art Situationen zu beschreiben. Sehr unterhaltsam.

Sprecher: Ulrike Grothe liest sehr schön, aber die meisten Hörbücher, die ich gehört habe, wurden von Dora Heldt selbst gesprochen. Bei der Autorenlesung scheiden sich die Geister. Ich hatte weniger Probleme mit Dora Heldt als Sprecherin, aber Ulrike Grothe hat mir doch etwas besser gefallen.

Fazit: Gute und lockere Unterhaltung für Zwischendurch.

My Opinion:

This was my first graphic novel and this will be my first review of one and I honestly don’t know where to start or how to do it. Anyway here goes nothing…

I have read Pride and Prejudice, I have seen the movies and BBC adaptations, shortly: I know the story. I cannot say anything about this graphic novel concerning the story, because it was pretty much lifted from the book: same dialogue, same scenes. All was good.

I enjoyed reading a graphic novel. It was fun and interesting. I liked the art work. It wasn’t really breath-taking, but then again who am I to judge. I have no artistic bone in my body.

The idea of turning a classic into a graphic novel is great and it just might get some people to read this version who just don’t want to spend all the time reading the original text. However, I will have to read other graphic novel adaptation of a book that I have not read before in order to get a feeling for the genre.

Bottom Line:

I really enjoyed the graphic novel as it was mostly lifted of the original. The art work was good and the read was fast.

Meinung/My Opinion:

Hilfe, meine Hexe sucht Freundinnen ist ein weiteres Buch in Hiawyn Orams Reihe Rumblewicks Tagebuch. Auch diese Geschichte wird aus der Sicht der Hexenkater Rumblwick erzählt. Er hat schwer an seinem Hexendiplom gearbeitet und soll nun die Hexe Sissi bei hexenmäßigen Dingen unterstützen.

Doch seine Hexe verbringt viel lieber Zeit in der Menschenwelt und benimmt sich auch wie einer, allerdings ist das verboten und strafbar. Mit ihrem unhexischen verhalten bringt Sissi nicht nur sich, sondern auch Rumble in Schwierigkeiten.

Das Buch wird in Tagebucheinträgen erzählt und ist wunderbar illustriert. Man wird in die Geschichte reingezogen. Dadurch dass Rumble mitten im Tagebucheintrag aufhört, erhöht sich natürlich die Spannung und man möchte wissen, was den nun schon wieder los ist.

My Unwilling Witch Sleeps Over is another book in the Hiawyn Oram’s Rumblewick’s Diary series. The story is told for the perspective of the cat. He worked hard for his diploma and is suppose to support his witch Haggy Aggy when she does witchy things.

However, his witch likes to spent time in the human world and with humans which is forbidden and punishable. Thus she not only gets herself into trouble but also poor Rumble.

The story is told through diary entires and the book is beautifully illustrated. As a reader you are drawn into the story especially when Rumble just stops in the middle of an entry. I just wanted to know what’s happening right now. Really nicely done.

Fazit/Bottom Line:

Wieder eine unterhaltsame und schöne Geschichte mit wunderbaren Illustrationen.

An entertaining and beautiful story with wonderful illusrations.

Top 5 Fairy Tales

I have been thinking about this for a while and I seem to enjoy the ones that I listened to as a kid on audio cassette (back when those still existed 😉 ). My favorite, however, is the one my dad had to tell me almost every night before I went to bed. He just told me half the story and would continue the next night and I always tried to trick him and tell him that we stopped earlier in the story than we really did, so it would be longer. Sometimes it worked 😉 Well, here are my five favorite fairy tales (and there are many more I liked, it was not the easiest choice).

My Opinion:

I stumbled across this short story when I was looking for a present and then I got myself one 🙂 The story was set in Edinburgh and so I picked it out. If you want to read this because if Edinburgh – don’t.

The story was sweet, short, entertaining and hilarious. It might not necessarily be YA as it seems a little more childish, but at the same time I don’t think it’s for kids either. Michael has moved into a new house with his kids and when they are gone to get some food, someone rings the bell. So, he not only meets a Pixie exterminator (yes, you read right) but he also meets some pixies.

Don’t take the whole story to serious: Using a paintball gun to capture pixies is funny and that’s what the story is about.

Bottom Line:

Will continue to read more of this stories. Fun. However, not for serious minds.

Hörbuch Kurzrezi: Sabine Ebert – Das Geheimnis der Hebamme

The following audiobook is written by a German author and read in German, so the review will be in German as well. I don’t think this book will be published in English at all. This is a historical novel which is set in Germany during the 12th century.

Sabine Ebert – Das Geheimnis der Hebamme

Meinung:

Schreibstil: Die Geschichte ist sehr angenehm und flüssig, leider habe ich manchmal das Gefühl er wirkt etwas gedrungen und nicht ganz so detailliert wie zuvor Iny Lorentz. Das liegt allerdings an der gekürzten Fassung.

Handlung: Die Handlung ist wirklich spannend und des Öfteren bin ich kommentierend und meckernd durch die Gegend gegangen, weil ich so in die Geschichte versunken bin. Wirklich unheimlich spannend. Allerdings finde ich die gekürzte Fassung etwas schwierig, da ich glaube, dass sehr viel gekürzt wurde. Dadurch habe ich das Gefühl, dass der Schreibstil etwas gedrungen und gehetzt wirkt.

Sprecher: Wieder einmal war die Sprecherin wunderbar. Julia Fischer liest einfach wunderbar und hat mich sofort gefesselt. Dabei ist sie so ruhig und aussagefähig, dass ich mich während des Hörens entspannt gefühlt habe. Es ist schwer zu beschreiben.

Fazit:

Ein wirklich spannendes Hörbuch, wunderbar gelesen. Allerdings habe ich beim Hören das Gefühl, dass es an manchen Stellen zu sehr gekürzt ist.

November Book Haul

It appears to be an all German book haul this month. The books are all written by German authors and in German, but next month there will be some more English titles. But at least some are inspired by or set in Britain.

Gitta Edelmann – Canterbury Requiem: Ein Krimi aus Kent

Ella ist gerade erst nach Canterbury gezogen als sie Aileen bei der Chorprobe kennenlernt. Am nächsten Tag lernt Ella, dass Aileen bei einem Unfall ums Leben gekommen ist. Warum aber hat sie so viele Beruhigungsmittel im Blut? Ella fängt an zu ermitteln. Das Buchcover ist sehr schön und erinnert mich vor allem sehr an Christie Romane. Und der Klappentext liest sich auch ein bisschen so. Ich bin auf jeden Fall gespannt.

Ella has moved to Canterbury and has just met Aileen in the choir group. The next day Ella learns that Aileen was killed in an accident. But why did the police find a great amount of sedatives in her blood. This triggers Ella’s interest and she starts to investigate. The cover reminds me very much of a Christie novel and the premise reads like a whodunit. I am really looking forward to this.

Andreas H. Schmachtl – Hieronymus Frosch: Darauf hat die Welt gewartet

Ich bin ein großer Fan der Tilda Apfelkern Reihe. Die Bücher sind wirklich wunderbar. Nun nehme ich mir Hieronymus Frosch vor. Die Geschichte des kleine Erfinderfrosches sind wieder einmal wunderbar illustriert (ich habe schon mal reingelinst) und die Texte sind in grün geschrieben – wie toll ist das denn.

I have already read books in the author’s other series (Tilda Apfelkern) and now I want to start with the series about an inventor frog. I already had a peak and the illustrations are again beautiful and the writing is green – just like Hieronymus – how great is that.

Andreas H. Schmachtl – Hieronymus Frosch feiert Weihnachten

Hierbei handelt es sich um die kleinen Weinhachtsausgaben vom Arena Verlag. Hieronymus ist eingeschneit und freut sich seine Wintererfindungen endlich auszuprobieren. Dabei ist er so beschäftigt mit erfinden, dass er fast das Weihnachtsfest vergisst.

This is a really small Christmas book in which Hieronymus is snowed in and can finally test his many winter inventions. But while he is inventing like crazy he almost forgets Christmas.

Andreas H. Schmachtl – Tilda Apfelkern: Frühling, Sommer, Herbst und Winter

Das nächste Buch in der Tilda Reihe erzählt wieder Geschichten von der kleinen Kirchenmaus und ihren Freunden. Wieder einmal begleiten wir Tilda durch ein Jahr und erleben neue Abenteuer mit ihr. Ich finde die Reihen einfach toll. Und besonders in der Weihnachtszeit macht es sehr viel Spaß Andreas H. Schmachtl zu lesen.

Another book about Tilda the church mouse and her friends. We accompany Tilda through the seasons which all bring new adventures. I just love that mouse. And I really enjoy reading books by this author around Christmas time. It is a lot of fun.

My Opinion:

After my wonderful and perfect Miss Marple read last month, I decided to grab another Christie and picked a novel right for October: Halloween. However, I was very sure that there was nothing sinister or spooky going to happen in this book. It was just really the title.

A young girl was murdered at a Halloween party after she claimed she witnessed a murder before. Mrs Oliver, who was at the party and who happened to be a crime novelist, is also friends with Hercule Poirot and asks him for help. So, of course he makes his way to the small town where he reunites with another old friend and former police officer Spence. And off he goes.

Well, this was not necessarily one of Christie’s best novels. I don’t remember a lot (which in itself is not a good sign): Poirot was going around asking questions, nobody had a good or real motive to murder the child, everybody starting talking psychology and mental illness, that the some people are just bad and can’t stop themselves and since everybody did this – whether specifically asked or not – it was rather annoying.

Altogether it seemed a little forced and not as fluent and effortless as many of her other novels.
Poirot was his usually charming and stubborn self. Yet still not enough to keep my continued attention.

Bottom Line:

A solid book, but not her best work.

Rating:
